This food is not going to reach them… a musing over the dinner table

When I go to restaurants I like to joke when my friends don’t finish their food. My recurrent lame sarcastic joke is “Think about the poor starving children of Africa”. Usually I get this annoyed look of dismissal. Now I’m getting more than a look, I get this reply, “This leftover food is not going to reach them”. Today some people came home to have lunch. And a conversation ensued like the ones that I have had with my friends.

The fact that people order food that they are not going to eat is bad unto itself. This shows a lack of sympathy for those who go hungry everyday around the world. Besides that statement shows a complete willing ignorance of a person that has no conscience. Also it shows how little and ignorant that person really is, when dealing with real world problems.

Ordering more food than what you are going to eat or buying more food at the grocery store than you are going to consume deprives people of food. In effect you are willingly denying sustenance to those who quite probably needed it more than you. The thing is that people are so self absorbed in their own pathetic existence that they do not realize the consequences of their actions.

Buying more food than needed creates a demand for a product. That demand raises the price of that product. Now you can get fewer products for the same price. Also the availability of that product is reduced when speculators manipulate production based on the demand to raise prices. In effect the quantities of food that can be acquired and distributed for those who need it diminish. Just because you ordered more food than you really needed.

In a nation of FAT people it should be a crime, clearly the sin part is not having an influence, to throw food away. Your gluttony and greed is in effect denying life saving sustenance to those who are not lucky enough to be born in a wealthy country. Chris Rock was right when he pointed out how silly we are when dealing on the issue of food. Our idiotic stances support the statement that “people get sick because food, we have so much food that we are allergic to food”. That is how silly and shallow you become when are born to privilege and abundance.
